Reducing or eliminating lactose in infant formula is warranted in specific medical cases, but most healthy infants can digest lactose as it is the carbohydrate source in breast milk. A recent analysis published in Clinical & Experimental Allergies found that from 2017–2019, US purchases of hypoallergenic or lactose-reduced formula exceeded estimates of medical need.

The analysis shows that 5.5% formula Bought is hypoallergenic. Additionally, 59% of purchased formula was lactose-reduced, and overall, 47% of the carbohydrate source in the formula was non-lactose.

“This study shows that there are many infants who use hypoallergenic and lactose-reduced formula unnecessarily. Corresponding author Bridget E. Young, PhD, of the University School of Medicine and Dentistry “This work highlights ways we can improve formula regulation in the US,” Rochester said.
