According to people with knowledge of the matter, the company is trying to push the update in the direction of making the device more of a laptop than a phone.
iPadOS 16 is a new software update for iPad. This has been redesigned for a multitasking look and feel – thus facilitating the display of open apps, and smoother switching between them. This new update will also allow users to resize application windows and provide new ways for users to handle multiple applications at once.
The iPad interface will be one of the biggest upgrades announced at the conference. The current, iPad Users can run the app in full screen view like on an iPhone, or run two apps side-by-side. The company also allows users to add a scaled-down version of a third app by swiping it in from the side. The changes will extend on that interface.
At the conference, the next software upgrades of the iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV will be announced.
According to available data, iPad accounts for nearly 9% of Apple’s annual sales, and that percentage has been growing in recent years. The hardware of the iPad, which now includes the same M1 chip as some Apple laptops, has grown in popularity, and in some ways the software hasn’t kept up.
Professional users of iPad have always loved an interface that is more like a laptop experience.
For iOS 16, the next version of iPhone software, Apple is planning a number of changes, including a new lock screen with widgets, Bloomberg reported.
The company will also refresh the Health app and add new social media and audio features to Messages. Redesigned apps for macOS are also coming, including a revision to System Preferences, its app for managing your Mac’s settings.
As for the Apple Watch, the company is planning changes to the watch face, system navigation, and some of the device’s apps, including a notable update to the fitness tracking features. The company is also planning a new low power mode that will allow users to operate the device when the battery life is running low. Current low power mode can only show time.
Software updates will help propel Apple’s hardware into the future. The company is planning four new iPhone 14 models for the fall, an updated iPad Pro, three new Apple Watches, and several Macs with the next-generation M2 chip. As for the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple is planning an always-on display option that will be supported by iOS 16.
While the new software will be announced on June 6, the company usually doesn’t release updates to consumers until the fall, the same time it ships new devices.
However, Apple will release the initial beta versions to developers next week. Public beta testing for more users will begin next month.
