Previously, there were no unified guidelines for the treatment of arthritis of the jaw, a potentially debilitating consequence of juvenile arthritis.

Doctors around the world lack insight into the best way to treat arthritis of the jaw, which is a common and serious consequence of juvenile arthritis.

Now, a team of researchers from Aarhus University, in collaboration with experts from a variety of international expert groups, has developed a set of interdisciplinary guidelines for optimizing the treatment of patients with the disease.

The tutorials focus specifically on early diagnosis and screening, and they can benefit children worldwide, says Peter Stoustrup, associate professor in the Department of Dentistry and Oral Health at Aarhus University.

“Starting treatment more promptly will result in better treatment outcomes. Jaw arthritis if left untreated can cause serious problems in adulthood, but treatment of the condition has been compromised. significant delay due to doctors’ uncertainty. health expert and medical systemso this study is important for all children with arthritis of the jaw,” he said.

Complex joints—complex treatment

About 1,500 children in Denmark are diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, which often leads to arthritis of the jaw. This leads to pain, decreased joint function and disruption of facial growth, which in severe cases can lead to sleep apnea and requires surgical treatment of the patient’s jaw.

To date, it has been difficult to find an effective treatment for jaw arthritis, as it is a complex joint and optimal treatment requires the involvement of many different groups of medical professionals, including: radiologists, pediatric rheumatologists, physiotherapists, maxillofacial surgeons. and orthodontist.

But now, a group of experts from these disciplines have come together to provide joint recommendations and guidelines for the interdisciplinary combined treatment of arthritis of the jaw.

“Health systems are organized in different ways around the world, and so the treatments provided are a bit random. Now, the guidelines have been drafted to be consistent. optimal partner in the treatment of this condition, which can guide treatment for each individual patient, but also helps health systems organize themselves in such a way that interdisciplinary approach treatment is possible,” explains Peter Stoustrup.

New recommendations and guidelines are based on the knowledge and evidence available in the region.

Research is based on guidelines that provide the basis for further research work and information, and guidelines will be revised as new knowledge becomes available.

Great value in countries without health insurance

In Aarhus, interdisciplinary treatment has been the norm for several years and so researchers from Aarhus University have become motivation behind the development of regional guidelines.

With recommendations in hand, Peter Bangsgaard Stoustrup says it will be easier to set up multidisciplinary practice centers for children and adolescents with the disease. arthritis of the function.

This will be especially valuable for patients in countries without public health insurance—the United States, for example.

“We have affiliated centers like Boston Children’s Hospital and hospitals in Atlanta and Calgary who are taking an organized and interdisciplinary approach to the treatment we’re offering. We hope that this can inspire other centres,” Peter told Bangsgaard Stoustrup.

The study was published in Arthritis & Rheumatism.
