NEW DELHI: Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) on Wednesday washed its hands in the wake of the state girls’ tournament organizers allegedly serving food from a toilet in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpursaid that the national agency was not involved in any way in the staging of the event.

The incident created a wave of outrage as politicians stepped in to condemn the shameful treatment of the players.

A purported video of the incident surfaced on social media showing cooked food stored in toilets at Saharanpur’s Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Stadium, where the kabaddi players took their own.
The state women’s kabaddi tournament was held from September 16 to 18, with more than 300 competitors from 16 state divisions participating.
The case has drawn much criticism, with the ruling BJP’s Pilibhit Varun Gandhi demanding whether Indian sports should purge politicians and their representatives to reach the top.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also protested the incident, asking how Indian athletes would win gold medals at the Olympics if they were treated in this way.
While the RLD called it a “heavy insult” to the players, Congress accused the ruling BJP of spending rupees on false publicity.
Additional Secretary General (Sports) Navneet Sehgal told PTI that Saharanpur District Sports Director Animesh Saxena was suspended on Monday.
