Ahead of Karnataka polls, controversy erupts over death of Tipu Sultan

Karnataka Council elections are coming up and the controversy over Tipu Sultan’s death has flared up again. The ideological debate over Tipu Sultan and Hindutva thinker VD Savarkar took a sharp turn. In the Yadgir district of Karnataka, tensions flared when two groups, one representing Tipu and the other, Savarkar, began a war of words.

When did the problem start?

Last month, tensions engulfed Karnataka’s Yadgir district over the renaming of the Tipu Sultan circle after Veer Savarkar. The situation worsened to the point that lawmakers imposed Section 144 in Yadgir from 6 a.m. Sunday to 11 p.m. Monday to avoid any untoward incidents.

Some right-wing organizations allege that the circle is unofficially named after Tipu Sultan and claim to name it ‘Savarkar Circle’.

In light of this incident, the pro-Hindu organization Shivaji Maharaj Sangathan alleged that Tipu Sultan’s supporters had unofficially named a circle after him in 2010. They asked to rename it after Veer Savarkar.

The town’s city council said the name Tipu Sultan Circle was unofficial so it should be renamed.

Descendants of Tipu Sultan have criticized both the BJP and the National Assembly for using Tipu Sultan’s name and attempting to polarize the vote in the upcoming Karnataka Parliament elections.

Politics of Tipu Sultan’s Death:

A part of the people in the old Mysuru belt claim that Tipu Sultan did not die fighting the British but was killed by two Vokkaliga chieftains, this has been disputed by some historians.

BJP leaders in Karnataka also support this argument because the Vokkaliga community has political power.

Meanwhile, a famous oracle asked for an end to the matter of Tipu Sultan’s death.

Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji, the chief pope of Sri Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math, highly regarded by the ruling Vokkaligas, called for information to be gathered on Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowd, according to a section of the people believed to have killed Tipu Sultan, before to any place. decision.

“The current confusion is hurting the feelings of the community and I call for it to be stopped immediately,” the oracle said.

What does the opposite say?

Congressional and JD(S) leaders have asserted that Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda don’t even exist and may just be fictional characters.

Criticizing the BJP, Congress and JD(S) say the saffron party is trying to infiltrate the Vokkaliga-dominated ‘Old Mysuru’ region ahead of the polls by making false statements.

Congress and JD(S) leaders including Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar and HD Kumaraswamy accused the BJP of “deceiving” the people, especially the Vokkaligas, by using fictional characters and saying they were killed Tipu Sultan. BJP leaders such as Union Foreign Minister Shobha Karandlaje, CT Ravi and Ashwath Narayan and others have asserted that there is historical evidence for Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda, that their names are mentioned in the text. plays and ballads, and they fought with Tipu to protect their family. of Mysuru Maharajas and to protect the state.
