8 people die in Secunderabad fire, “overcharging” of e-scooters A possible cause

Eight people were killed and several others injured after a massive fire broke out at a tram showroom and spread to a hotel on the upper floor of a multi-storey building in Telangana’s Secunderabad last night.

Initial investigation indicated that the fire was caused by an electrical short in the basement of the building, where about 40 e-bikes were parked. Sources said the short circuit occurred while the battery was being charged.

The fire quickly spread to the Ruby Pride Hotel, where at least 25 guests were staying.

“It looks like there are 23 rooms on all four floors of the hotel. The smoke is coming down the stairs from the bottom to the top floor. Some people sleeping on the first and second floors came out into the hallway thanks to the thick smoke. and died,” said CV Anand, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad.

Officials said the Fire Department rescued some people using crane ladders, while some locals also joined and helped in rescue operations. Videos also show several people jumping out of hotel windows to try to escape the fire.

Mr Anand said the injured were transported to different hospitals in the city for treatment and the fire was under control.

Officials said the sprinkler system in the building was not working when the fire broke out, which is currently under investigation.

Telangana Interior Minister Mohammad Mehmood Ali expressed condolences for the loss of life and said an investigation had been ordered to determine the exact cause of the fire.

“Fire crews tried their best to rescue people from the motel but due to the thick smoke, some people died. We are investigating how the incident happened and one case has been confirmed. register,” he said.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to family members of those killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 for each injured person.

The state government has also announced compensation of Rs 30,000 each to the families of the victims.
