1987 Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione participates in auction


The Ferrari 288 GTO was an icon of the 1980s, but the Evoluzione version took it to an even more extreme level. Now, one of these rare supercars is for sale through RM Sotheby’s.

288 GTO is the second car to wear the Gran Turismo Omologato badge after 250 GTO built between 1962 and 1964. Like its predecessor, the 288 GTO was designed as a race car specifically, in this case for FIA Group B and road racing. Group B was canceled before the Ferrari factory could race the 288 GTO, but it continued to be produced.

FIA rules say manufacturers must build 200 road cars to match a design for Group B. Ferrari started production of the 288 GTO in 1985 and finished building 272 for the session. standard version. But the rules also allow for a minimum of 20 Evolution models per year, with a larger range of design changes.

288 GTO Evoluzione took advantage of this rule provision, although the cancellation of Group B meant Ferrari could only produce five cars. Unlike the standard 288 GTO, these are pure racing cars.

The revised bodywork is made of fiberglass and Kevlar, with a carbon fiber rear wing, keeping the weight down to just 2,072 lb. The Tipo F114B 2.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 from the standard GTO also gets a larger turbo, increasing power from 400 hp to 650 hp and allowing for a claimed top speed of 229 mph. hours.

The car for sale — chassis number 79888 — was sold new to Belgian industrialist Jean Blaton, who raced under the moniker “Beurlys” from the 1950s to the 1970s, often at Ferraris. The GTO Evoluzione has changed hands several times since, with billionaire and current Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll among its previous owners.

Recently refreshed with mechanical maintenance and repainting, the car retains its original engine and transmission, and is Ferrari Classiche Certified.

While RM Sotheby’s doesn’t list a price, this 288 GTO Evoluzione is likely to sell for serious money due to its rarity and incredible performance. Standard 288 GTO sold for $4.4 million at the company’s Monterey Car Week 2022 sale, and the Evoluzione is rarer not only for that car, but also for the original 250 GTO, of which 39 were built. create.

The desire of 250 GTO means Evoluzione may not be achieved financial lofty heights Ferrari’s iconic, however. In recent years, two of those cars have sold for about $49.4 million in an auction and $70 million in a private sale.
